Right now I am travelling to dive centres one at a time. Eating at their table. On their boat at six in the morning. Working out whether one person really does run the whole week, or whether it only reads that way on a website.

The four below are what one of them looks like when it is finished. The islands are invented. The standard is not. Every real trip that goes on this site has to hold a whole day hour by hour, name its sites, admit what it is short of, and put one number on the week with nothing waiting behind it.

What this is

Say yes. We handle everything.

Black sand at six in the morning, and the only prints on it are yours and the ones belonging to whoever carried your tanks down. A reef pass where seven hundred sharks hang in the current, waiting on a tide nobody told you about. A wreck that starts where the beach ends. But those mornings belong to whoever is already standing in them, and no grid of four hundred boats has ever told you which one is which. Therefore we went and found the people who wake up inside them — the ones who get in the water with you instead of waving you off the dock. Everything around the diving is built the same way. Every bed. Every meal. Every ride from the airport. One price. Your wallet never comes out again.

You have done the other version. Standing on a dock at seven in the morning working out what the tanks came to, whether lunch was in it, what the taxi is going to be on the way back. But nobody has ever come up off a good dive thinking about arithmetic. Therefore we folded every number into one number, and there is nothing left to carry down to the boat except your own gear. If anything goes wrong out there, it is ours. In writing.

You read one page all the way down

Not a grid. One trip, one operator, the whole story from the first dive to the last dinner, with the number sitting at the bottom already finished. You will know before you reach it.

You see every line before you pay

Pick when, pick your room, and the total is in front of you to the cent before the card comes out. Then a person writes back, usually the same day — not a reference number. Someone who has been on that boat and knows what the current does that month.

Then it goes quiet

Airport pickup. Tanks. Gear. Beds. Meals. The DiveAssure dive insurance you would have forgotten. The photos you would never take of yourself. The only line left on your list is the flight.

Someone is holding your name

You walk out of the terminal into air warmer than you expected and there it is, on a card, spelled right. The room is ready. The boat leaves at dawn. Nobody asks you for anything again.
